Armed groups in Iraq, including the police and one of the country's most powerful militias, attack LGBT people with impunity, a new report says.

Heteronormativity has always been the prevailing status quo in conservative-majority Iraq, but no legislation had explicitly criminalized same-sex conduct until Saturday when the parliament made.

Iraq criminalises same-sex sexual activity between men and between women. Possible sentences are unclear, but the death penalty has been imposed on LGBT people.
